What your bass lessons cover
Every lesson is one-to-one and shaped around the music you want to play. Beginners start with the essentials: how to hold the bass, plucking and fretting technique, and simple root-note grooves that lock in with a beat. From there you’ll learn basslines from songs you know, how they fit around the chords, and how to keep solid time.
If you’d like more structure, your teacher will set out a clear plan covering scales, reading tab and notation, and moving smoothly between notes. Lessons run from complete beginners through to intermediate players.
Why learn bass?
The bass sits between the drums and the rest of the band, holding the rhythm and the harmony together. It’s a great choice if you love groove and feel, and a good bass player makes any band sound better. Many people find simple basslines quick to pick up, which makes it a rewarding instrument to start on.
Bass lessons for children
Children can start bass once they can comfortably hold the instrument and reach the frets. Short-scale basses are made for smaller players, and your teacher can advise on a good size. If you’re not sure your child is ready, just get in touch.
Bass lessons for adults
Lots of adults come to bass as a first instrument, or switch over from guitar to join a band. Others are returning after years away and want to get their hands working again. Whatever your reason, lessons are built around the songs and styles you enjoy. Evening slots run until 9:30pm, Monday to Thursday, so lessons fit around work, and you set the pace.
Grade exams, if you want them
Teesside School of Music is an official London College of Music exam centre, so bass grade exams are available here if you’d like a recognised qualification. Grades 6 to 8 also carry UCAS points. If you’d rather just learn to play, that’s completely fine.
No bass yet?
You don’t need to buy one before you start. We have bass guitars you can use during your lessons, so you can get a feel for the instrument first. When you’re ready to buy, your teacher can recommend a sensible first bass.
