What flute lessons involve
The flute works differently from most wind instruments: there’s no reed, and you make the sound by blowing across the hole in the lip plate, a little like blowing over the top of a bottle. Early lessons focus on exactly that, along with posture, how to hold the flute comfortably, and breathing so you can sustain a phrase.
Once you have a clear tone, you move on to reading music, fingerings across the low and middle registers, tonguing and simple pieces. Over time lessons add scales, the high register, dynamics and a widening range of music, from classical and folk to pop melodies and film themes.
Who flute lessons suit
Flute suits children and adults. Children can start once their arms are long enough to reach the keys comfortably, and a curved head joint makes that possible for younger players. Plenty of adults learn from scratch too, or come back to a flute that has been sitting in a cupboard since school.
If you’ve played the recorder, you’ll find reading music and many finger patterns familiar, which gives you a head start.
Grades, if you want them
Flute grade exams run from Grade 1 to Grade 8 with the main exam boards, and Grades 6 to 8 carry UCAS points. They’re optional. Every lesson is planned around the student, so you can work steadily through the grades or simply play the music you enjoy.
