- Recording, mixing and beat-making
- Taught by a music technology graduate
- No previous experience needed
What your production lessons cover
Every lesson is one-to-one and planned around what you want to make. That might be recording vocals or an instrument, building a track from scratch, making beats or getting a mix to sound clear and balanced. Your teacher will cover the basics properly, from setting up a session and recording a clean take to editing, arranging and mixing.
You’ll learn on the kind of software used in studios, such as Pro Tools, Ableton, Logic and Cubase. The skills carry across from one program to another, so what you learn here will still be useful whatever you end up using at home.
Along the way you’ll pick up the language of the studio, such as levels, EQ, compression and effects, and more importantly when and why to use them. The aim is for you to make good decisions on your own tracks, not just follow steps.
Your teacher
Production lessons are taught by Kieran, who holds a BSc in Music Technology and an MSc in Audio and Music Technology. He also teaches guitar, bass and ukulele, so he’s well placed to help players record their own instruments and songwriters capture their ideas. Lessons suit beginners through to intermediate students.
Who production lessons suit
You don’t need any previous experience, and you don’t need to play an instrument. Lessons work well for:
- Young people from around 8 who are curious about how music is made
- Songwriters and singers who want to record their own songs
- Band members who’d like to understand recording and mixing
- Adults who make music at home and want to know what they’re doing and why
Bring your own projects
If you’re already working on tracks, bring them along. Lessons can focus on the problems you’re actually running into, whether that’s a muddy mix, a beat that doesn’t sit right or a vocal that won’t cut through. If you’d rather start from scratch, your teacher will set out a clear plan.
Want something recorded instead?
As well as lessons, we have an acoustically treated recording studio for solo artists, groups and bands, at £36 per hour for recording and mixing. Email info@teessideschoolofmusic.co.uk to talk through what you need.
