Keyboard or piano?

Keyboard and piano share the same notes, but the way they’re usually played is different. Piano lessons tend to centre on reading music and classical technique. Keyboard lessons lean towards playing songs from chords, keeping a steady rhythm with your left hand and making use of the sounds and styles built into your instrument. If you’re not sure which suits you, book a lesson and talk it through with your teacher.

What your keyboard lessons cover

Lessons are one-to-one and based on what you want to play. Most students start with simple melodies, then add left-hand chords so their playing quickly sounds like the real song. From there you’ll learn chord shapes and inversions, how to read chord charts as well as written music, and how to choose sounds and rhythms that suit each piece.

If you’d like to accompany a singer, play in a band or work out songs by ear, your teacher will build lessons around that. Our keyboard teachers include players who have spent decades performing professionally, so you’ll be learning the skills working musicians actually use.

Keyboard lessons for children

Children can usually start from around 6. A keyboard is a friendly first instrument because it’s light, affordable and makes a good sound straight away. Early lessons keep things practical, with familiar tunes and short pieces they can show off at home.

Keyboard lessons for adults

Keyboard is a popular choice for adults who want to play the songs they love without years of formal study. Whether you’re a complete beginner or picking it up again, you set the pace. Evening slots run until 9:30pm, Monday to Thursday.

Choosing a keyboard

You’ll need a keyboard at home to practise between lessons, but there’s no need to buy one before your first lesson. Keyboards come in different sizes, commonly 49, 61, 73 or 88 keys, and not all have touch-sensitive or weighted keys. A full-size piano has 88. Your teacher can recommend something that fits your goals and budget.

Grades and qualifications

Many keyboard students simply play for fun. If you’d like a formal qualification later on, your teacher can talk you through the options, including the ABRSM piano grades we teach.

Visiting the school

We’re in Thornaby with free parking at the rear, a bus stop outside and ground floor access. Students come from Stockton, Middlesbrough, Acklam, Eaglescliffe, Yarm and further afield.

FAQs

Questions people ask

Should I choose keyboard or piano lessons?

Both use the same keys and notes, so the skills overlap. Choose piano if you'd like classical technique, reading music and ABRSM grades; choose keyboard if you mainly want to play songs with chords, use different sounds or play in a band. You can always switch later.

What age can my child start keyboard lessons?

We recommend starting from around 6 years old, though we have taught younger children before. There's no upper age limit, and plenty of our students are adults.

Which keyboard should I buy?

For a complete beginner, a 61-key, touch-sensitive keyboard is a sensible start. If you think you might move on to piano, an 88-key keyboard with weighted keys is worth considering. Ask your teacher before you buy.

How much do keyboard lessons cost?

£18 for 30 minutes or £36 for an hour. You pay as you go when you book online, with no contract or term fees.

When are keyboard lessons available?

Monday to Thursday between 3pm and 9:30pm, so you can come straight after school or in the evening after work. Live availability shows when you book.

What if I need to cancel or move a lesson?

Give at least 48 hours' notice and you can rearrange or cancel through your online account. With less notice than that, the lesson can't be credited or refunded.

Ready for your first lesson?

Students come to us from Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Ingleby Barwick, Yarm, Eaglescliffe, Acklam and across Teesside. Pick a time that suits you and book online in a couple of minutes.
