What your piano lessons cover
Every lesson is one-to-one and shaped around you. For most students that means learning to read music properly, building a relaxed hand position and good finger technique, and working through pieces that become steadily more satisfying to play. Scales, chords, timing and the basic theory behind them come along naturally as you go.
Your teacher will also follow your own interests, whether that’s classical repertoire, film and TV themes, pop songs or learning to improvise. We teach complete beginners through to advanced pianists, so there’s always a next step.
Piano lessons for children
Children usually start from around 6. Early lessons focus on finding their way around the keys, reading simple tunes and getting both hands working together, with short pieces they can play for the family at home. All our teachers are DBS checked, and lessons are planned so that regular, short practice brings visible progress.
Piano lessons for adults
Around half of our students are adults. Some have never played before; others had lessons as children and want to pick the piano back up. You set the pace and the goals, and evening slots until 9:30pm, Monday to Thursday, make it easy to fit a weekly lesson around work.
ABRSM grades, if you want them
Our piano teachers teach the ABRSM grade syllabus, one of the best-known music qualifications, and Grades 6 to 8 also carry UCAS points. Your teacher can prepare you for each grade, including the scales, sight-reading and aural tests. If exams aren’t for you, that’s completely fine, and plenty of students simply learn for the pleasure of playing.
Practising at home
You don’t need to own a piano before you start, because lessons take place on our instruments here. As a piano is a large purchase, many of our students buy a keyboard to practise on at home, and what they learn in lessons applies in exactly the same way. If you can, look for a full-size keyboard with weighted keys, as it will feel much closer to a real piano. Your teacher is happy to advise before you buy.
