Singing
Fifteen years as a primary teacher, singer for bands in England and New Zealand, and a love of musical theatre and jazz.
Good singing starts with the basics: breathing, posture, pitch and tone. Your teacher will help you breathe in a way that supports your voice, sing in tune with less strain, and gradually extend your range. You’ll also learn how to warm up and look after your voice, so you can sing for longer and sound better doing it.
Technique is always tied to real songs. Lessons are one-to-one and built around the music you want to sing, so each new skill goes straight into a song you care about.
For many students, the biggest change is confidence. Singing in front of someone else can feel exposed at first, and lessons are a safe place to get used to it. As you progress, your teacher can help you with microphone technique, stage presence and preparing for a performance, an audition or simply singing in front of friends.
Our two singing teachers bring different strengths. Claire has sung with bands in England and New Zealand and has a particular love of musical theatre and jazz. Robyn is a singer-songwriter with over ten years of performing, composing and recording, and can help you write your own lyrics and melodies. Robyn also teaches piano and keyboard, which is useful if you’d like to accompany yourself.
Claire spent fifteen years as a primary school teacher, including teaching music to children aged 3 to 11, so she knows how to keep young singers engaged. Lessons for children focus on healthy habits and enjoying their voice, with songs they already know and love. Get in touch if you’d like to talk about whether your child is ready to start.
It’s never too late to learn to sing. Adults come to us to sing in a band or choir, to prepare for a special occasion, or simply because they’ve always wanted to. Evening lessons run until 9:30pm, Monday to Thursday.
